Doris McCoy

I am a wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, and sister whose life journey has crossed paths with profound loss and healing. I am the survivor of a murdered son and, as of 18 months ago, discovered that I am also the mother of a compulsive gambler.

Recognizing that I had, in some ways, contributed to my son's gambling addiction, I sought help-first through individual counseling with a therapist and later through participation in the Recovery Road On-line Family support group. Over the past year, I have completed both one-on-one and group therapy. Through this process, I came to understand that I, too, was on a path of recovery. I learned that compulsive gambling is not just a habit but a powerful addiction that can deeply affect families and communities-particularly those in underserved BIPOC communities.

I decided that if there were a way for me to give back and support other families in my community, it would continue to aid in my own healing. A few months ago, my therapist introduced me to the idea of pursuing peer certification to help others facing similar challenges. My goal is to achieve certification within the next few months. As I move toward retirement, I plan to dedicate my time to assisting my community in this meaningful work-helping others find hope, recovery, and a way forward through even the most difficult times
